About Double DIN Head Units
Recently I changed our Focus' head unit for a Pioneer AVH-4100NEX that I bought because it was very well recommended as the best head unit with navigator.
I am quite happy with the purchase as it comes with a shitload of features and the navigator is indeed fantastic. It is compatible with my back camera and the screen is the biggest of is kind. |
Now of course, what's the fuss lately with double din head units uh? Well, simply put, you can do a lot of stuff with them. For us, it means I can sync my phone and give voice commands to make a phone cal of send text messages just with my voice, my two hands at all times on the wheel. I don't even look at the goddamn thing! It plays whatever I want from my iTunes library, if I am parking the rear camera pops right there at full HD...
Sure thing not every head unit does all that stuff but if you get yourself some good quality stuff, it does. I mean this pioneer costs around 400 bucks right? Well, f**cking well spent if I tell you. Three pre-amp outputs to feed guess what, my 5channel amp ( 6x9 speakers from JL with separate tweeters on front, two 6x5 pioneer on the back and a smaller 8 inch sub) and a JL 1000D monoblock to power my 12w7 by JL. I spend on average 5 hours a day on my car... yep, I do NEED music.
If you do too, check that article I referenced, it's great and has lots of reviews. Or sure thing just go to amazon haha.
Cheerio.

How I got my 12 inch sub and why.
Absolutely great stuff this JL subwoofer. After days of research I decided to go for this one instead of the Sundown merely for a matter of quality in general and I couldn't (well, she couldn't) be happier. |
So I did some research about subwoofers, since last time i got myself one was 2006 i believe and I was expecting things would have change a lot.
They did and brands I was an advocate before, like BOSS, seem to be plain shite now. Good enough, I fell onto this article and after comparing with JL's website and Amazon reviews, I decided to go for the JL 12W7 that those guys recommended as the best 12 inch subwoofer. I already own a 8 inch sub, but is very small, and doesn't really pump very low bass. It is great for adding depth of sound as I mostly hear rock and it isn't so bass-heavy but Melisa loves RnB and she was like "this bass isn't enough" (yeah right?) . Anyway, off I was to search some good stuff. Our Focus trunk is usually full of stuff so I needed something powerful yet not brutally space consuming. So i went for a 12 inch. |
Since I was already getting the 2nd sub for the car I thought going for something really loud to piss people off (classy) and was about to get the Sundown but I wasn't 100% sure about it... It was a bit confusing with all those sound pressure things but I get it now.
All in all a great choice.

My beloved 8 inch subwoofer
Last year we bought (She chose it, I paid for it, that means, we bought it. End) the Focus and I was quite unhappy with the factory stereo since day one.
First thing I did was to get a 5 channel amp to feed the factory speakers a bit better and i thought about getting a nice small shallow mount subwoofer on the back so I went for a 8 inch sub. After some months letting cash replenish, I did some research and bought myself what I believe is the best 8 inch subwoofer for the money. (as they state on my reference site) All in all, i'm happy with it but it is true it lacks some depth of bass and it doesn't pump SUPER hard as I was expecting it to do altough I knew it wouldn't. For the very few bucks I paid for It it's good tho. |
So I got myself the Punch PS3 Shallow Mount with 150W RMS. Nice, inexpensive, powerful enough for rock, a great deal. |
The last thing I want to address is this: with car electronics, do your research. There's a lot of garbage and as i confirmed reading that article i linked to, had I just bought whatever topseller amazon tried to push to me, iwould have ended with some pyle shit and very frustrated. So kudos to the guy on that site for being so open about that .
